A brief history of Diving Duck Production’s
LA GUITAR SHOWS and LA MUSIC EQUIPMENT EXPOS

LA Guitar Show In 1983 in Los Angeles, The LA Guitar Show established the formula for all consumer music expos that followed. It brought together for the first time vintage, custom, large and small manufacturers of guitars, amps and other music related products and educators. The show’s creator and producer, Loni Specter, oversaw all aspects of the show including venue selection, exhibitor sales and relations, advertising and PR as well as booking and scheduling all live performances and personal appearances.

Artists gracing the show’s stages include such luminaries as; Allan Holdsworth, Joe Walsh, Neal Schon, Billy Sheehan, Paul Gilbert, Jeff Berlin, Frank Gambale, Yngwie Malmsteen, Strunz & Farrah, Seymour Duncan, Jaco Pastorious, James Burton, Warrant, Michael Angelo, Marty Friedman & Jason Becker, Mitch Perry, Grant Geissman, T. Lavitz, Coco Montoya, Larry Carlton, Stephen Paul, Rick Turner, Rik Emmett, Emmett Chapman, Greg Wright, Jim Lauderdale, David Becker Tribune, G.I.T. staff, Jeff Richmond, Scotty Anderson and many others.

Thousands of dollars in equipment and accessories were given away at the shows' exciting onstage "Prize Drawings" and exhibitors included; (in random order) Aria, Laney, Mesa Boogie, ART, Yamaha, Guild, Heritage, Gibson, Groove Tubes, Carvin, Fender, Ibanez, G&L, SWR, Marshall, Martin, Ernie Ball, B.C. Rich, Rockman, Hughes & Kettner, VHT, Seymour Duncan, ESP, Jackson/Charvel, Schecter, Rivera, E-Bow, Norman’s Rare Guitars, Robin, Mark Lacey, Schon, L.R. Baggs, Bill Lawrence, Rickenbacker, Randall, Dean Markley, Valley Arts, THD, Ovation, Fostex, Trace Elliot, Peavey Vinci Strings and dozens more.

Media and school participation included show programs by Music Connection and BAM, exhibits from Guitar Player, Guitar World, Guitar for the Practicing Musician, Rock City News, Song Writers Workshop, GIT and Dick Grove School as well as remote radio broadcasts and sponsorships by KMET, KNAC, and Cable TV spots featuring Yngwie Malmsteen and Teri Nunn of Berlin.

Another special event staged by Specter, garnering national media coverage in 1988 was the "First Ever Rock Seance" which was held under the stars in the courtyard of Ren-Mar Studios Hollywood, the location for that year’s guitar show. The Los Angeles Times listed the event as one of the 10 most unusual happenings for that year and was covered by FOX TV and local TV as well as being featured in Business Week magazine.
